16 March 2023 02:40:46 PM

To promote sustainability, the House Committee on Sustainable Development Goals chaired by Rep. Eduardo "Bro. Eddie" Villanueva (Party-list, CIBAC) on Thursday hosted the “Circular Economy for a Sustainable Future” webinar.
Committee Vice Chairperson Rep. Jose Manuel Alba (1st District, Bukidnon) explained to the 300 attendees of the webinar that the circular economy concept is a systemic approach to economic development, which could benefit business, the society, and the environment. He added that the webinar was organized to generate awareness on circular economy and develop Sustainable Development Goals champions at the House of Representatives.
Rep. Alba cited the House’s passage of House Bill 1272 or the proposed “Green Public Procurement Act” that would not only require all branches of government to procure materials and products at the lowest price, but also consider their green component, as a manifestation of the House’s support for the circular economy and sustainability.
According to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Technical Specialist Jie Pan, the government plays a pivotal and enabling role in creating the right incentives and regulatory environment to spur change and encourage financiers to step in. She added that clear guidance is needed on how existing policies on sustainable development may be effectively implemented and monitored.
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines Climate Change and Energy Program Head Atty. Angela Consuelo Ibay noted the potential of sustainable production and consumer choices in the circular economy to 1) educate consumers in generating less waste, 2) create jobs where waste is a resource, and 3) stimulate demand for circular products.
Nestlé Philippines Corporate Affairs Head Joey Uy shared how the company uses renewable energy and recyclable packaging, among others, to proactively reduce emissions.
Other webinar resource persons included UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Edwine Carrie, BASF ASEAN Senior Manager for Country Development Yoshiyuki Kashiwagi, and BASF Philippines Senior Manager and Industry Lead for Coatings and Packagings Shiela Tang.
