Several leaders of the House of Representatives led by Deputy Speaker Raymond Democrito Mendoza formed the Philippine delegation at the 43rd ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Assembly being held at Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Among them are Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairperson Rep. Maria Rachel Arenas, Committee on Women and Gender Equality Chairperson Rep. Geraldine Roman, Committee on Housing and Urban Development Chairperson Rep. Jose Francisco Benitez, Committee on Higher Education Chairperson Rep. Mark Go, Committee on Justice Chairperson Rep. Juliet Marie De Leon Ferrer, and Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs Chairperson Rep. Ron Salo. On behalf of the Philippine delegation, Mendoza delivered the opening statement during the First Plenary Session. He stressed that the country strongly supports this year’s theme of a sustainable, inclusive, resilient ASEAN. In order to achieve this, Mendoza urged the ASEAN countries to strive for regional solidarity and cooperation, saying further that the AIPA serves as an effective platform for dialogue on inter-parliamentary concerns based on equal partnership, mutual respect, and mutual benefit. Meanwhile, he presented the 19th Congress’ roadmap to spur economic recovery while ensuring fiscal stability during the Marcos Jr. administration, which is the medium term fiscal framework. “As we move forward to the post-pandemic era, the AIPA must recognize that the path to greater prosperity in the region is by greater regional cooperation and interdependence,” he said. At the closing ceremony on Thursday, the Philippine delegation received its first AIPA Distinguished Service Award in 20 years. The last award was given by then ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization (AIPO) in 2002.
