The House Committee on Public Order and Safety chaired by Masbate Rep. Narciso Bravo, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), conducted a webinar Thursday on fire safety and prevention. In his opening remarks, Committee Vice Chairman and PATROL Party-list Rep. Jorge Bustos said the webinar entitled “SIKLAB: PAG-ALABIN ANG KAALAMAN UPANG SUNOG AY MAIWASAN” is one of the committee’s contributions to the celebration of the House of Representatives Month 2021. “The webinar aims to equip the participants with the basic knowledge and skills regarding fire safety and prevention in the home,” Bustos said. The first speaker in the webinar was Fire Superintendent (FSupt.) Douglas Guiyab, Deputy Director for Fire Safety and Enforcement assigned at the BFP National Headquarters (NHQ). Guiyab gave a brief introduction about the BFP whose mandate is to prevent and suppress destructive fires, conduct investigations, provide emergency medical and rescue services and enforce Republic Act (RA) 9514 or the “Fire Code of the Philippines of 2008”. He described what fire is, its stages and classes, as well as the common causes of fires. Guiyab also gave home fire safety tips. He reminded participants to never use the fire exits in the office as smoking areas. He stressed the importance of evacuation drills and exit drills for muscle memory. Guiyab talked about fire safety equipment, among others. Meanwhile, the second part of the presentation was about the implementation of the Fire Code of the Philippines. Engineer Marcial Battung, BSF Chief of the Fire Safety Inspection and Evaluation Section, BFP-NHQ, discussed the regulations under the Fire Code of the Philippines. His presentation dealt with facts and figures of fire incidents; regulations for pre and post constructions; and fire safety features for single and two-family dwellings. BFP Chief Fire Director Louie Suralta Puracan delivered a short message at the end of the presentation. He thanked members of the committee for their initiatives in coming up with a worthwhile and productive activity “while we heighten the awareness on how to prevent fires and how to act during fire incidents”. He encouraged everyone to remain vigilant even inside the house to save lives and properties.
