The House Special Committee on the North Luzon Growth Quadrangle chaired by Pangasinan Rep. Ramon Guico III convened for an online briefing Monday, by the Department of Agriculture (DA) led by its Secretary, Dr. William Dar. The meeting focused on the status of implementing the DA’s plans and programs for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 as well as on its proposed plans and programs for FY 2022 for the North Luzon Regions namely the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley and the Cordilleras. In his opening remarks, Guico underscored the vital role of agriculture in the country. “Being the backbone of our country’s economy, agriculture plays an important part to the agenda of our country as we approach the road to reset, rebound, and recover this 2021,” he said. For his part, Dar said the strength and future of North Luzon’s economy lies in agriculture, particularly food production and food processing. He cited North Luzon’s role in the country’s quest for high level of food efficiency and security. “Makakaasa kayo na bubuhusan natin ang North Luzon ng kaukulang tulong at suporta,” Dar said. First to give an update on the projects, activities and programs for 2021, distribution of allocation by province and by program as well as on the proposed budget for 2022 was DA Regional Field Office (RFO) 1 OIC Regional Technical Director for Research and Development Erlinda Manipon followed by DA RFO 2 Regional Executive Director Narciso Edillo and finally by RFO Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) Dr. Cameron Odsey. Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHILMECH) Director IV Baldwin Jallorina gave an update on the distribution of farm equipment, machineries, and agricultural materials to farmers and fisherfolk in the North Luzon regions.
