Solon urges parents to take part in the drive against drug addiction

A lawmaker today urged parents to take a more active part in the government's campaign against drug addiction, which has wrecked thousands of homes and contributed to the exacerbation of crime and violence in the country.

Rep. Catalina Bagasina (ALE Party-list), member of the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality, said parents have a big role in the fight against drug addiction "because they are the ones who have a better grasp of the problems of their children."

"The campaign being waged by the government and the involvement of various civic, religious, and business organizations in the fight against the drug menace will all go to naught without the fullest support and cooperation of parents who are directly in-charge of the guidance of their children," Bagasina said.

Bagasina said parents are in a better position to teach their children about the harmful effects of drug addiction.

"It is lamentable, however, that some parents are not aware of the pernicious effects of drug abuse that they care less of what might happen to their children if they take the prohibitive drugs," Bagasina said.

Bagasina noted that the drug menace has become so alarming that nearly one third of students in Metro Manila schools, colleges and universities are drug users.

"In many slum areas, drug addiction has become so rampant that violence and crime have become a day-to-day activity," Bagasina said.
