A Metro Manila lawmaker is batting for the declaration of a "National Thank You Day" on the 20th day of October every year to celebrate the Filipino people's bayanihan spirit of showing respect, gratitude and hospitality especially to the elders.

Rep. Cynthia Villar (Lone District, Las Pinas City) said celebrating a "National Thank You Day" is not simply a sales or marketing promotional scheme but an idea that should be ingrained in the Philippine culture and should be practiced by generations and generations of Filipinos.

"The Filipinos are renowned as a people of warm hospitality and respectful of age-old values. This is fostered heavily by our bayanihan spirit," said Villar, Chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education.

Villar said this is a fact bolstered by a study conducted by the Reader’s Digest Canada Magazine on common courtesies, which checked whether residents of a city still honor and observe gratitude.

"The City of Manila ranked number 22 in the study. The cities of New York in America, Zurich in Switzerland and Toronto in Canada topped the 'courteous cities list'," Villar said.

In House Bill 5466, Villar proposed the declaration of the 20th day of October every year as a "National Thank You Day."

"The day shall be a celebration of the Filipino bayanihan spirit of according respect for the elders, warm hospitality and distinctive courtesy, and a commitment that the Philippines takes pride in its age-old respectful values," Villar added.
