The House Committee on Tourism has adopted House Resolution No. 1775 authored by Buhay Party-list Rep. Jose L. Atienza, Jr., which seeks to mandate the Department of Tourism (DOT) to intensify promotion by requiring all local commercial airlines to include in their official in-flight announcements the infomercials about the beauty and hospitality of the Philippine Islands and its people.
In his resolution, Atienza said that airlines can play an important role in the promotion of the beauty of the Philippines and its people through in-flight announcements or infomercials which can attract the attention of the passengers.
The resolution states that the DOT is the primary planning, programming, coordinating, implementing and regulatory government agency tasked to develop and promote the tourism industry, both domestic and international, in coordination with attached agencies and other government instrumentalities.
The DOT is likewise mandated to instill in the Filipino the industry’s fundamental importance in the generation of employment, investment and foreign exchange, the resolution states.
While the Philippines struggles with an image problem, the DOT is mandated to prepare market development program to attract people to visit the Philippines and enhance the prestige of the country and the Filipino people in the international community, the resolution states.
“The Filipino people are renowned all over the world for remarkable qualities, often downplayed or overlooked, but which nonetheless brings pride to the country. Indeed, the legendary Filipino hospitality is not limited to the Philippines but is seen everywhere wherever there are Filipinos”, the resolution states.
Hence, the DOT should be mandated to require all local commercial airlines to include in their official in-flight announcements the infomercials about the beauty and hospitality of the Philippine Islands and its people, the resolution states. | Joselito Menorca
