The Committee on Basic Education and Culture chaired by Rep. Roman Romulo (Lone District, Pasig City) on Friday, adopted House Resolution 1334 authored by Rep. Kristine Alexie Tutor (3rd District, Bohol). The resolution commends and congratulates the students, teachers, and coaches of Candijay Municipal High School and Jagna High School for their outstanding performance in the 19th Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO) 2020 1st Virtual Robotics Challenge held last October 22, 2020. The panel also approved the creation of a Technical Working Group (TWG), to be headed by Rep. Eric Olivarez (1st District, Parañaque City), to harmonize House Bills 220, 5391, 5861, 5927 and 6791. The said bills aim to institute support mechanisms and protection for public school teachers and personnel on matters of student discipline for classroom management. The Department of Education (DepEd) through its Undersecretaries Jesus Mateo and Tonisito Umali, signified their support for the measures. However, they cited the need to review some sections of the bills that may be in conflict with Republic Act 7610 or “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act,” and other provisions that need to have specific guidelines and parameters to avoid undue delegation of legislative powers to an administrative agency. Likewise, a TWG headed by Rep. Macnell Lusotan (MARINO, Partylist) was also created to consolidate and harmonize HBs 374, 5194, 5816 and 6643. These measures would integrate the subject on voter’s education in the K-12 curriculum for both public and private schools.
