The House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, chaired by Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza (Party-list, TUCP), in an online meeting Friday, approved the allotment of P5 billion for various assistance programs for overseas Filipino workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The assistance programs include repatriation, medical expenses in the form of vouchers for six months from arrival in the country, migration fees for overstaying Filipinos, legal assistance, and basic necessities, among others. These are contained in the unnumbered substitute bill that consolidated House Bill 234 authored by Rep. Alfred Vargas (5th District, Quezon City), HB 277 by Rep. Michael Edgar Aglipay (Party-list, DIWA), HB 4156 by Rep. Teodorico Haresco Jr. (2nd District, Aklan), and HB 5043 by the Makabayan bloc. Joining the meeting were Committee on Labor and Employment Chair Rep. Enrico Pineda (Party-list, 1-PACMAN), Committee on Economic Affairs Chair Rep. Sharon Garin (Party-list, AAMBIS OWA), OWWA Administrator Hans Cacdac, POEA Administrator Bernard Olalia, DOLE Undersecretary Claro Arellano, DFA Undersecretary Sarah Lou Arriola, and several OFWs.
