The House Committee on Women and Gender Equality chaired by Rep. Ma. Lourdes Acosta-Alba (1st District, Bukidnon), in partnership with the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development Foundation, Inc. (PLCPD), on Monday held a short orientation on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE) for legislators at the House of Representatives. Entitled “Issue Orientation on Understanding what SOGIE means and why it matters?”, the orientation was meant to 1) raise awareness on the SOGIE; 2) identify challenges and policy proposals to address gender issues; and 3) generate commitment and support for gender equality as a human right and as a precondition for advancing development and reducing poverty.  Among the resource speakers present were Professor Natsy Africa Verceles, Director of the University of the Philippnes Center for Women and Gender Issues (UPCWGS), and Perci Cendeña, President of Babaylanes, Inc.
