The House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Alan Peter "Compañero” Cayetano inaugurated three new breastfeeding and lactation stations Monday at the South Wing Annex Ground Floor. Prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Secretary General Atty. Jose Luis Montales, Chairperson of the House Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System signed Memorandum Order 18-80 declaring the policy of the House to promote and encourage breastfeeding and provide facilities and opportunities for working mothers to fulfill their maternal obligations while performing their office functions. The Medical and Dental Service (MDS) shall exercise direct control and supervision over the use and maintenance of the lactation stations. The event was attended by Congressional Spouses Foundation Inc. President and Chairperson Rep. Ma. Laarni Cayetano, Association of Women Legislators Foundation Inc. President Deputy Speaker Rose Marie “Baby” Arenas, Committee on Women and Gender Equality Chairperson Rep. Ma. Lourdes Acosta-Alba, Reps. Lianda Bolilia, Josephine Ramirez-Sato, Irene Gay Saulog, Arlene Brosas, Josefina Tallado, and Ruth Mariano-Hernandez. Cayetano said breastfeeding is a matter close to her heart, recalling that during her term as Taguig City Mayor, she actively promoted breast milk letting programs, including building lactation stations in government facilities which led them to have their own milk bank. "Nabawasan ang pagkakasakit ng mga bata dahil nabigyan sila ng paunang nutrisyon," she said. Cayetano said the State promotes and encourages breastfeeding and the establishment of breastfeeding stations through Republic Act No. 10028 or the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009. Acosta-Alba urged everyone to continue making change work for women and to be champions for women's health and rights. Deputy Secretary-General Atty. Annalou Nachura, the House GAD Focal Point System Alternate Chairperson, said they are proud that men have been instrumental in realizing the breastfeeding project in the House. “Thank you Secretary General Montales and Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano. The HREP is truly a breastfeeding-friendly office," Nachura said.
