The House Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources chaired by Rep. Leo Rafael Cueva (2nd District, Negros Occidental) this week approved two bills seeking to ban illegal fishing practices in the country. These are House Bill No. (HB) 3660 authored by Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado, prohibiting the use of chlorine in all fishing activities, and HB 3784 by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City), banning the use of cyanide, dynamite, and all forms of illegal fishing techniques in the live fish trade. The panel also approved the creation of a technical working group to draw up a substitute bill for HB 4051 by Rep. Lawrence Fortun (1st District, Agusan del Norte), seeking to regulate the catching, sale, purchase, possession, transportation, importation, and exportation of coral reef herbivorous fishes in the country.
