The newly-created Special Committee on Persons with Disabilities, chaired by Rep. Ma. Lourdes Arroyo (5th District, Negros Occidental), on Wednesday held its organization meeting to discuss its jurisdiction over all matters directly and principally related to the needs, rights, and welfare of all PWDs nationwide. Leaders and representatives of various PWD non-governmental organizations shared their plight and the discrimination they had encountered despite existing laws covering PWDs. Arroyo, a PWD herself, vowed that the House, under the leadership of Speaker Alan Peter “Compañero” Cayetano, will address the plight of PWDs and will work for the creation of a PWD commission. “This organizational meeting is only the beginning, we will make sure that the voices of all PWDs with various circumstances shall be heard in this forum,” Arroyo said.
