Though the holidays are fast approaching, the House Committee on Appropriations chaired by Rep. Isidro Ungab (3rd District, Davao City) remains hard at work as it approved on Monday two crucial House Bills, both principally authored by Speaker Alan Peter "Companero" Cayetano. First, House Bill No. (HB) 5712, seeking to modify the salary schedule for civilian government personnel and authorizing the grant of additional benefits, was referred for plenary deliberation and sponsored on the floor by Ungab on the same day. Under this bill, the proposed minimum basic salary, Salary Grade 1, will be raised from P11,068 to P13,000 to remain competitive with the minimum daily wage in the National Capital Region (NCR). Second, the still unnumbered substitute bill seeking to create the Department of Filipinos Overseas and Foreign Employment was sponsored by Rep. Mario Vittorio Mariño (5th District, Batanngas), as Chairman of the Committee on Government Reorganization. In particular, the panel approved the appropriations provisions of the proposed "Department of Filipino Overseas Act of 2019."
