A technical working group of the House committee on Mindanao affairs on Wednesday resumed discussions on proposals to raise appropriations for Mindanao in 2019. Rep. Peter Unabia (1st District, Misamis Oriental), who presided over the meeting, reiterated that Mindanao is set to receive only 16.2 percent of the national budget this year. The TWG cited several reasons to boost funding for Mindanao, such as poverty incidence of 40 percent and unemployment of up to 32 percent. Moreover, the island region is home to a rapidly growing population of 26 million, or one-fourth of the overall population of the country. Committee vice chairperson Rep. Alberto Ungab (3rd District, Davao City) emphasized that government agencies must properly account for the needs of Mindanaoans. In particular, Ungab questioned the Department of Public Works and Highways over the lack of roads which hamper the growth and development of Mindanao. Meanwhile, guest resource speakers led by Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Maria Lourdes Japson and Mindanao Development Authority Director Reyzaldy Tan joined in the deliberations.
